So, this is what beer league cricket looks like. Ad a beer league hockey player, I can appreciate this.

72

u/WatercressPersonal60 5d ago

My beer league hockey team pays for a service that records all our games using a single camera that tracks the bulk of movement on the ice. It's kind of embarrassing to see how slow we are on video when it feels like the game is happening at pro speeds when we're actually playing.

It's like how do I not dominate every Tuesday night? We are so slow.

17

u/mb303030 5d ago

Haha I feel that as a long time ice hockey goalie. I look at some of the replays and in my head I'm like yeah that's broduer level save and then I see the replay and cringe. Sometimes it's cool though when you actually make a nice save or play by the forward. All my son's games are recorded on YouTube too. It's so different from when I was growing up playing. They even have an IG channel with plays of the weeks and highlights. It's wild lol

10

u/Ligalotz 5d ago

I’m telling you, it’s the livebarn effect. We have some former echl guys and some D1 guys come out occasionally and even they look slow on the livebarn cam despite completely flying through the zone whenever they’re on the ice. I started bringing a gopro to watch my net play and it looks a lot faster

3

u/OrdinaryInternet 5d ago

Wonder if y’all use livebarn, we don’t pay as a team but individuals who want to have access to watch can pay to watch a rink. Neat service, albeit niche.

3

u/WatercressPersonal60 5d ago

It is livebarn. I think it is done as an individual but he gives his credentials out to the whole team.

u/nomnommish 5d ago

It is called indian premier league.

You can call the IPL a lot of things but calling it a league of overweight middle aged men is just plain stupid wrong. That would be like calling the NBA a league of retired old people.

Sometimes you just get dumber from reading things on the internet and I frankly feel like that after reading your post.

4

u/SigherPunk 4d ago

For context, the Indian Premier League is the 2nd biggest sports league on earth by revenue, right after America's NFL.

7

u/dirtyshits 5d ago

Lol why are you getting downvoted?

In it's earliest years it was definitely filled with older international players or guys who were recently retired but over the years(as it's popularity and $ have gone up) it's actually now THE premier league to play. Only international level cricket has a leg on it but that makes sense considering you are playing for the country.

The who's who of cricket play in the league. I guess people really don't know a thing about cricket.

16

u/nomnommish 4d ago

If I had to guess, I am getting downvoted because people love to get racist and stereotypical when it comes to South Asians and basically anything related to the Indian subcontinent.

I mean, look at the upvotes on the post I replied to. It was a patently absurd and utterly false. It's even more ironical because the IPL has tons of international players and basically represents the "best of the best" cricketers. And the days of unfit cricketers are long gone and fitness is a huge deal for most national level players.

Sure you might have a few unfit players here and there who make up for it with extraordinary talent but so does baseball.

3

u/No-Advice-6040 4d ago

Indeed. These days players do well for their country so they can fetch a good salary when it comes to being picked for the IPL.

1

u/HairyH00d 4d ago

You sound like you know your cricket. What league is this clip from?

3

I play local cricket and it's just full of this. You think this is bad, I've seen worse. I once had a teammate have a catch hit of his own bowling. Only had to take a couple steps to reach it. Somehow, on a perfect dry day, he slipped over as he went to catch it and the ball hit his nuts. To top it off, the bloke who had hit it ended up staying in and making 135. Absolutely shockingly bad play by overweight cricket tragics is the norm

Once the ball goes out it’s an automatic 4 runs to the other team.

19

u/WarConsigliere 5d ago

It'd be four directly from the shot. But once the guy's fielded it the four are overthrows.

The odds are that by the time he's shaping to throw it in the batsmen have run one and turned for a second, so they'd get credited for those plus the overthrow boundary, probably totalling 6.

There was one test where the West Indian player (Joel Garner, I think, but I may be wrong), let the ball slip out of his hand and it went over the fence behind him for six overthrows - making a rare 8 on the shot.

6

u/raath666 5d ago

Is it though? Since, the throw never crossed the stumps. I think this should be considered a miss field and not overthrow or byes.

8

u/WarConsigliere 5d ago

Yeah, it is. As soon as he chose to throw it in it's a wilful act. Not a good one, but the will was there.

Law 19.8:

19.8 Overthrow or wilful act of fielder If the boundary results from an overthrow or from the wilful act of a fielder, the runs scored shall be:

any runs for penalties awarded to either side; and

the allowance for the boundary; and

the runs completed by the batsmen, together with the run in progress if they had already crossed at the instant of the throw or act.

39

As someone who just had my son play under 5 little league...

You don't want that. It is cute. For maybe 20 minutes. And unless you're invested in it because of your kid in it and you know their teammates it gets boring real quick.

However a clip show of an under 5s tournament with the best/cutest plays would probably be amazing.

2

u/Standard-Potato-2067 5d ago

Probably a live stream, not tv. Could be wrong.

But considering the graphics are a knock off of the ICC's, probably a live stream then.

42

u/gizry 5d ago

Can someone help explain the results of this to those of us who have no idea how cricket is played

59

u/count_takeshi2 5d ago

The fielder is trying to stop the ball from getting to the edge of the pitch, the batsman stands to gain 4 points if it gets there. And it does.

10

u/markpelly 5d ago

At least the batsman is still standing..

80

u/coppersocks 5d ago

Yeah this guys whole point is to prevent the ball from going over that rope.

When you’re batting you’re essentially trying to score “runs” in one of two ways:

Hit the ball far enough away for long enough to run to the opposite wicks (for every run there it’s 1 run, then if you run back it’s 2, run again it’s 3, etc)

OR get the ball to cross the boundary ( if it crosses without hitting the floor it’s 6 runs, 4 if it does).

So this guys job is three fold

  1. Try to catch the ball which will get the batsman out of the game.
  2. Failing that then get the ball back to the area around the wicks as quickly as possible as a batsman can get caught out whilst he is running so doing so will stop him attempting to score any more.
  3. Failing that than *just don’t let the bloody ball cross the boundary *

As you can see he spectacularly failed on all counts and ends up helping the batsman to an easy 4 points.

12

u/PixelForgDev 5d ago

> Try to catch the ball which will get the batsman out of the game.

Just a small clarification for others(probably unneeded), it only counts if the ball was caught without it hitting the ground first

5

u/DigitallyInclined 5d ago

Wow….that was a great explanation! TIL

3

u/[deleted] 5d ago

[deleted]

2

u/coppersocks 5d ago

No once the ball crosses the boundary then it’s either the 4 or 6 you get. Nothing more. And no, generally in cricket once the ball is in the hands of a fielder it’s a matter of a second or two that it’s back with either the bowler or wicket keeper who can run the batsman out.

Also you generally know whether it’s crossing the boundary or not (apart from freak incidents like this). So no, it’s really rare that the batsman will ever score more than 3 runs, let alone 4. Especially given how good at throwing and catching the fielders are in the high levels of the game.

→ More replies (3)

9

u/yuriacc 5d ago

He's trying to catch the ball and throw it back to the bowler before it reaches the boundary. If it reaches the boundary the opposing team will score more runs.

4

u/yeetboy 5d ago

For the baseball fans in the stands, this is the equivalent to the classic Jose Canseco flyball off his head for a home run.

5

u/throwawayplusanumber 5d ago

Baseball was developed from cricket. Basically the fielder is ideally trying to catch the batter out, but since he missed that chance, he is trying to get the ball back to home plate (wicket) and/or the catcher (wicket keeper) as quickly as possible.

7

u/account22222221 5d ago

This was an excellent play, worth almost unheard of 15 wickets. A lot of people are misinterpreting this as a fuck up but they just don’t understand how cricket is played!

Similar to curling the fielder can’t TOUCH the ball to control it until it leaves the outer ring. Instead he is using a series of very intricate wiffs to guide the ball to the part of the field he wants.

Then once the ball leaves the outer zone he is allowed to ‘chuck’ the ball, but knowing this was the last pitch of the set he does a trick play to fool the opposing teams watchers. He throws hard to to hard out left but instead uses his foot to deflect it soft right. Just off screen in the original clip you can see the watchers tripping themselves as they dive in the wrong direction!

This not only gives the runner a ton of extra time to score but it also sets the opponent to start of their next go at bad it a really bad spot, not unlike a good billiards player leaving the cue in exactly the spot they want to set up for the next shot!

This dude is one of the old greats of the sport. He’s retired and out of shape, but he’s just that good that he still putting on a fucking clinic of high level cricket here!

u/RotrickP 5d ago
